PROMT Translation Helps PayPal to Communicate with its Users

St. Petersburg, July 3rd, 2012. PROMT, the leading Russian developer of linguistic IT solutions for Enterprise level clients and private users, reports that the PROMT translation technology has been integrated into the PayPal payment system.

PayPal is one of the largest international electronic payment systems that has more than 150 million accounts worldwide. PayPal has localized websites in 25 languages, and synchronization of these websites is a crucial task. The company regularly translates large volumes of documents of various content, such as user interfaces, interactive helps, FAQs, error messages, templates for the user support desk, user guides, etc.

PayPal decided to use the machine translation (MT) for localization for two basic reasons.

  1. It takes less time to enter the market. The PayPal websites content includes about 1.5 million words for each supported language; each two weeks about 15,000 words are being translated. Time allocated for translation is an insignificant part of the entire lifecycle.
  2. It is economically efficient. Customized MT systems allow creating translations that require only minimal post-editing efforts. It is much cheaper than translation from scratch.

The company imposed a number of technical requirements to the machine translation vendor:

  • Integrate the translation technology with SDL WorldServer, which is currently the main technology used for localization
  • Save the original format of technical data (variables, meta data, etc.) in the MT
  • Provide tools using which the PayPal linguists could change the system settings without assistance to reduce time for post-editing.

All these requirements have been successfully fulfilled by PROMT. Within two months from the project start date in 2009, the basic customization of the translation profiles was made for translation from English into French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. In addition, PayPal linguists have been trained to use the PROMT tools and the MT system for future work without assistance.

In 2011, PayPal became one of the first PROMT customers in the USA using the new PROMT technology, DeepHybrid. This technology combines benefits of two basic MT methods: flexibility and predictability of a rule-based MT and text smoothness of a statistical MT.

Assessment of Implementation Results

After implementation of the hybrid technology, PROMT tested the translation quality of randomly selected PayPal materials that were not considered during the customization and received the following results:

  • Quantitative indicators: evaluation the translation quality estimated using the BLEU technology increased approximately by 15-20%; the edit distance (the number of necessary corrections) decreased by 10-15%.
  • Assessment from the professional translator: in 80% of cases, DeepHybrid ensures smoother and accurate MT that requires less time for post-editing.

PROMT solution deployment allowed PayPal to increase the rate of translation and reduce costs essentially. The use of machine translation allowed to reduce the amount of routine operations, such as typing, search of terminology and tag placement, and allowed post-editors to pay more attention to the style and the general quality of translation.

"The PayPal localization team has successfully integrated the PROMT MT solution into the translation environment and uses it for almost two years to translate texts into a number of languages. In the circumstances of a tight schedule and the ever increasing need for reduction of time for operations without sacrificing the quality, the PROMT system proved its indispensability as an effective automated translation tool. The most valuable advantage is the options for internal customization, so our linguists can train the machine translation system for post-editing by professional translators who can add new terminology to the MT user dictionaries for each specific project. The MT benefits become more and more obvious. The machine translation allows increasing cost efficiency, reducing labor costs and improving the translation quality".

Olga Loskutova, PayPal MT Expert
(Localization Department)

"Usage of the PROMT technology for the PayPal localization can be considered the industry standard for the MT use for software localization. The PayPal website is available in more than 20 languages, and its updates require continuous translation. The trainable PROMT system provides the high quality translation of the updated content ensuring the essential time saving and cost reduction. It is a substantial reason for using the machine translation."
